In order to make money online you must know how to do 2 simple things:  find the right keywords  and write good content.  It is oft said that content is king.  If this is true, then surely keywords must be queen.  The right keywords and good content go hand-in-hand,  one won’t work without the other.  Sure, SEO is important but it all starts with the right keywords and ends with good content built around those keywords.

Keywords are the fuel that drive visitors to your site.  If you target keywords that have few to no monthly searches, or that are way too competitive, then  you will not get any visitors to your site.  Worse yet, if you target keywords that get a lot of searches but have no commercial intent (i.e. they are not “buying” keywords), then  or your visitors will not purchase anything from you and you will be left wondering why you cannot make money online even though you might be getting a lot of traffic.

There are 5 characteristics to a good keyword.

1. It should be a long-tail keyword phrase (3 words or more)
2. It should have high monthly search volume (at least 500 when using “exact” search phrase on Google keyword tool, but preferably 1000 or more)
3. It should have low competition and the top 10 results for that keyword in Google (page 1 results) should be relatively poorly optimized for that keyword.
4. It should have commercial intent. About 90% of searches on the Internet have no commercial intent whatsoever. It is just people looking for free entertainment or free information. It is imperative that you find the 10% of keywords that have commercial intent.
5. The keyword must “fit” your content.  Just because you found a good keyword with good commercial intent does not mean it will convert. If the visitor reaches your site and sees that it does not match his search criteria, then he will click off your page in a hurry.

It is critically important that you do not short-cut your keyword research if you want to make money online.  Finding the proper keywords will make or break you.

As you may have guessed, it can be very time consuming digging up and researching excellent keywords that you can rank for.  There are many keyword tools on the Internet that help you do this and can save you TONS of time and money pursuing the wrong keywords.

The second key to making money online is content.   Good content intrigues readers and holds their interest.  Good content builds trust.  Good content builds loyalty.  Good content gets linked to from other sites.  These links are one way backlinks which the search engines love.  Most importantly, good content sells.

There are two critical things your content must do in order to make money online.

First it must capture and hold your reader’s attention.    It must keep them coming back for more information and it must persuade them to take action. Give your reader valuable information for free.  This builds trust and loyalty.  Then, recommend products to them and they will be much more likely to buy.

Secondly, your content must attract search engines.  This is where search engine optimization (SEO) comes in.  There are many factors to good on-page (content) SEO.  Far too many to discuss here, but there are a lot of good resources out there to help with you with SEO.

If you don’t already have a blog or website that you can control the content of, then you should get a Squidoo lens and set it up with your own unique content.  The content that you write, whether it is your own blog, website or your Squidoo lens, should incorporate your killer keywords (as discussed above) in it that are hyperlinked back to your money pages.  I HIGHLY recommend you create a new web/blog page or Squidoo lens for each keyword.

Once you have your content posted, you should get the search engines attention, notify them that this content exists.  You do this by creating backlinks to your unique content.  You can create backlinks with article marketing, submitting your feed to RSS feed aggregators, submit your URL to social bookmarking sites, or post blurbs about your content sites on social networks such as Twitter or Facebook.  This will get you some immediate traffic along with getting the search engines to notice your site.

If you don’t understand some of these concepts, just do a Google search.  There is plenty of information about them on the web.

If the content 0n your site is good, then the search engines AND visitors will keep coming back to your site.  Other webmasters will link to your content giving you even more backlinks and more traffic. It all begins with good content.
